Owatrol CIP Rust Inhibiting Primer

Owatrol CIP (Corrosive Inhibiting Primer) is a high-performance, rust-inhibiting primer enriched with the anti-corrosive power of Owatrol Oil. It deeply penetrates surfaces, displacing moisture and air to create a stable, long-lasting base for single or 2-pack finishes. Suitable for new or rusted metal, interior or exterior use, and both horizontal and vertical applications, CIP eliminates the need for sand or shot blasting and delivers outstanding protection in even the harshest environments.

General Directions

• Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease and other surface contaminants.
• Surfaces exposed to chemicals (acids, alkalis, or salt deposits) should be washed using copious amounts of water or steam cleaned. Allow to fully dry.
• Severely contaminated surfaces should be cleaned using an appropriate solvent.
• Remove all mill glaze from new metal.
• Feather in any sharp edges.
• Round off any sharp edges to a 2mm radius.
• All surfaces cleaned with water or steam cleaned should be allowed to dry a minimum of 24 hours before applying CIP, except for galvanised surfaces treated with Owaphos. Galvanised surfaces treated with Owaphos should be coated within 8 hours.
• Do not remove firm rust.

New or Bright, Clean Metal:

• Sand surface with 80 grit abrasive (nothing finer) to form a key.
• Thoroughly dust off.
• Note: New metal is classed as pickled stock or metal that has been sandblasted to remove any mill glaze and is not rusty. Alternatively for new or bright clean metal use PID 60.

Rusted/Oxidised Surfaces:

• Remove all loose and flaking rust
• Thoroughly dust off.
• Note: For excessively and deeply rusted surfaces apply a coat of Owatrol Oil.

Previously Coated Surfaces:

• Remove all loose, flaking, rust and paint.
• Feather in any sharp edges.
• Thoroughly dust off.
• Apply a coat of Owatrol Oil to the entire surface.

Applying CIP to new surfaces

• Prime with 1 coat of Owatrol CIP and allow to dry. For surfaces subject to aggressive climatic conditions apply 2 priming coats.

Applying CIP to clean, lightly rusted or new unpainted rusty steel

• Apply 2 coats of Owatrol CIP allowing drying time between coats.

Applying CIP to old or severely rusted surfaces

• Either apply 3 coats of Owatrol CIP allowing drying time between coats or apply wet on wet applications of Owatrol Oil until the rust is fully saturated and allow to dry for 24 hours and then apply 2 coats of Owatrol CIP allowing drying time between coats.

Applying CIP to previously coated surfaces

• First spot prime all exposed metal with 2 coats of Owatrol CIP allowing drying time between coats and then apply a 3rd coat over the entire area and allow it to dry.

Q: Is it necessary to sand rusted surfaces until the steel is shiny again before applying CIP?

A: No, it's not necessary. While CIP can be directly applied to oxidized surfaces, it's recommended to brush the surface with a wire brush to remove the worst of the rust.

Q: Once dry, how long can you leave CIP exposed before covering it?

A: Ideally, CIP should be covered as soon as it’s dried to avoid possible surface contamination.

Faulty Items

Faulty items can be refunded or exchanged within 30 days. All returns are tested, and if no fault is found, no refund will be issued you'll have the option to have the item returned. For faults discovered after 30 days, please contact the manufacturer for further support.
