Osmo Oil Stain is ready to use. Do not thin.
- Stir well before use
- Clean old microporous stains thoroughly
- Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed
- Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes in wood with Osmo Wood Filler
- Sand wood surfaces carefully - As a general rule, wear a dust mask during sanding works. Begin with coarse sandpaper – final sanding work for flooring grit P120- 150, for furniture girt P220-240.
- Before oiling the surface, remove sanding dust with a broom or vacuum
Note: The finished surface is influenced by several factors, including the condition of the wood. Therefore, a trial application is always required, especially for unfamiliar surfaces
Always test a small area of the surface to be treated to ensure you are happy with the finished results
- Stir thoroughly before use to ensure the product is completely mixed. It is recommended to stir the product from time to time while working.
- Transparent colour:with Osmo Floor Brush, Microfibre Roller, Oil Finish Applicator Fleece (Hand Pad Holder) or Double Blade Scraper, apply very thinly and evenly to the clean and dry wood along the wood grain and rub into the wood with a white pad. Allow to dry for approx. 12 hours under good ventilation.
- Intensive colour: if a stronger colour is desired, apply thinly along the wood grain with Osmo Microfibre Roller or Osmo Floor Brush, and spread well. Tip: With an unused Microfibre Roller, any brushstrokes can be removed within 30 minutes after application. Ventilate well while drying. If an even more intensive colour is desired, apply a second coat with Osmo Double Blade Scraper, Microfibre Roller or Osmo Floor Brush, and rub into the wood with a white pad.
- For smaller areas, e.g. furniture, Osmo Oil Stain can be applied with Osmo Easy Pads - Lint Free Cloth.
- After thoroughly drying, a top coat should be carried out with a clear Osmo Polyx-Oil.
- Applications with the Hardener for Oil Stain 6631 as drying accelerator are also possible as an option. Please observe the instructions for a correct application.
- For dark woods and hardwoods rich in extractives (e.g. Wenge, Merbau, Jatoba etc.), we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin or Osmo Polyx®-Oil 2K Pure. A trial application is recommended.
- Colour tone 3501 White: An intensive white surface is not recommended for flooring because it is more sensitive and prone to natural yellowing. As a top coat for such surfaces, the pigmented Osmo Polyx-Oil - 3040 White or Osmo Polyx-Oil - 3240 White transparent is recommended.
- Colour tone 3519 Natural: A thin coat is recommended either with Osmo Microfibre Roller or Osmo Floor Brush. After drying, a coat with a clear Osmo Polyx-Oil should be carried out. The natural colour tone of wood is preserved – it does not enhance the tone of wood, no permanent wet effect. This finish leaves white streaks on red/dark wood species.
Please note:
Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the tin
Regular Cleaning: Dust mopping using the green Dust-Mop from the Osmo Mop Cleaning Kit for Floors. Damp mopping using Osmo Wash & Care or Osmo Flexi Spray Mop.
Occasional Maintenance: Intensive cleaning and refreshing using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner or Osmo Maintenance Oil.
Recoating: Simply re-apply one coat onto the clean and dry surface when signs of wear become visible. No sanding is necessary for spot repairs or future applications.
Q: Which wood types are suitable for Osmo Oil Stain?
Ans:
- Osmo Oil Stain is recommended for use on oak, pine, spruce, beech, ash, alder, Douglas fir, birch, and larch. These woods absorb the stain evenly and provide a high-quality finish. For maple, American walnut, and European walnut, it is possible to use the stain, but you should apply it very thinly and carry out a trial application first to check the results.
- Osmo Oil Stain is not recommended for cedar, iroko, mahogany, teak, South American walnut, sapele, bamboo, acacia, ipe, merbau, ebony, wenge, sycamore, and rosewood. For these woods, it is better to use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin. Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin
- Additionally, green oak is not recommended due to its typically high moisture content above the 20% maximum. Idigbo should also be avoided because it contains yellow dyes that may leach and cause staining when wet or in contact with iron. Any wood previously treated with varnish, lacquer, or other coatings must be fully sanded down to bare wood before applying Osmo Oil Stain.
How should I prepare Osmo Oil Stain before use?
Ans: Always stir well using a flat stirring stick or spatula before application. Failing to mix the pigments and ingredients thoroughly may result in uneven colour and patchiness.
Why is my Osmo Oil Stain drying slowly?
Ans: Drying times may increase if the product is over-applied or if there is poor ventilation in the area. For faster drying, especially in time-sensitive projects, consider using Osmo Oil Stain Hardener.
How many coats should I apply for the desired finish?
Ans: For a transparent look that highlights the wood’s grain, apply one coat using a buffing pad. For a deeper, more intense colour tone, apply a second thin coat using either a buffing pad or an Osmo microfibre roller. Always ensure the previous coat is fully dry and stable before applying the next.
Do I need a top coat after using Osmo Oil Stain?
Ans: Yes, a final coat of Osmo Polyx®-Oil is essential. It seals and protects the colour, ensuring durability and long-term resistance to wear.
Which top coat should I use if I want a natural, untreated wood look?
Ans: If you want to retain the light, raw appearance of the wood, it is recommended to use Osmo Polyx®-Oil 3044 Raw as your final top coat. This product is specially formulated to preserve the natural tone of lighter wood species.
