• If applying over Chalk Paint™, ensure the paint is completely dry first, Gold Size can be applied directly over dry Chalk Paint™
• Have your metal leaf or bronze powder ready and within reach before you begin, once the Size is transparent you'll want to work without delay
• Use a good quality brush to apply, wash it in water immediately after use before the Size dries on the bristles

• Apply a thin, even layer of Gold Size over the area you wish to gild using a brush
• The Size will appear white when first applied, this means it is still wet and not yet ready
• Watch for the colour to shift from white to purple, and finally to transparent, this takes approximately 15 minutes depending on temperature and how thickly it was applied.
• Once fully transparent and tacky to the touch, the Size is ready, do not apply leaf while it is still white or purple, as the leaf will slip rather than adhere
• Carefully lay your metal leaf onto the sized area, pressing gently with your fingers through the backing sheet
• Smooth the leaf down and remove any excess with a soft, dry cloth using light, sweeping motions
• For bronze powders, dab gently onto the tacky surface using a soft brush or cloth
• Once the leaf is applied and fully dry, seal with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Lacquer or Clear Wax to protect the gilded finish

Q. How do I know when Annie Sloan Gold Size is ready for metal leaf to be applied?

A. The drying process is helpfully colour-coded. When first applied, Gold Size appears white, at this stage it is still wet and the leaf will not adhere properly. As it begins to dry it turns purple, and finally becomes fully transparent. That transparency is your signal that the Size is ready, it should feel tacky to the touch, like the back of a sticky label, rather than wet. Applying leaf too early is the most common mistake, so patience pays off. The process typically takes around 15 minutes, though this can vary depending on the temperature of your environment and how thickly the Size was applied.

Q. Can I use Annie Sloan Gold Size over Chalk Paint™, and does the gilded area need sealing afterwards?

A. Yes, Gold Size can be applied directly over fully dry Chalk Paint™, making it a natural companion for furniture painting and decorating projects. Once your metal leaf is applied and completely dry, it is important to seal the gilded area to protect it from tarnishing and wear. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Lacquer is the most durable option, particularly for high-use surfaces, while Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax works beautifully for more decorative pieces. Either will preserve the lustre of the metal leaf and keep it looking its best for years to come.

Faulty Items
