    Overview

Every great paint job deserves a great finish. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Wax is the essential final step for any surface painted with Chalk Paint™, sealing and protecting your work while adding depth, character and lasting beauty. And with four distinct waxes to choose from, the finish is entirely yours to define.

Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax is the foundation of every waxed finish. Applied in a thin coat with a Chalk Paint™ Wax Brush, it seals and protects painted furniture and walls, emphasising the depth of colour beneath. Leave it with a soft, mellow sheen or buff it up to something more lustrous, either way, it's the perfect protective base. For a distressed look, lightly sand back between coats to reveal glimpses of the wood or paint underneath.

Dark Chalk Paint™ Wax brings age and atmosphere to your paintwork. Worked into the surface, it settles into brushmarks, cracks and mouldings to emphasise texture and character, the kind of patina that usually takes decades to achieve naturally. Use it over a base coat of Clear Wax for a beautifully layered, antique effect.

Black Chalk Paint™ Wax delivers a cooler, more dramatic version of that same aged quality. It deepens and enriches colour, brings out texture in brushwork and mouldings, and adds a striking edge to any piece. Like Dark Wax, it works best used alongside Clear Wax to seal and protect.

White Chalk Paint™ Wax works differently - softening and lightening colours for an airier, more Nordic feel. It can also be applied directly onto bare, unvarnished wood as a liming wax, creating a beautiful limed oak effect without any additional products.

Chalk Paint™ Waxes are for indoor use only. For outdoor projects, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Lacquer is the recommended finish.

    Application

    Applying clear chalk paint™ wax

    • Ensure your Chalk Paint™ is fully dry before beginning. Load a small amount of Clear Wax onto a Chalk Paint™ Wax Brush or a clean lint-free cloth.
    • Work in small sections at a time, applying the wax in circular motions to work it evenly into the paint surface.
    • Wipe off any excess wax immediately with a clean cloth, less is more. A thin, even coat gives a better result than a thick one.
    • Allow the first coat to become touch dry, approximately one hour, before applying a second coat. Drying time may vary depending on temperature, humidity and how thickly the wax was applied.
    • For a distressed look, lightly sand back the first coat once dry to reveal glimpses of wood or paint underneath, then apply a second coat of Clear Wax over the top.
    • Leave for a subtle mellow sheen, or buff with a clean cloth to achieve a higher shine.

    Applying dark chalk paint™ wax

    • Apply a base coat of Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax first and allow it to become touch dry, approximately one hour. Dark Wax should always be used over Clear Wax, never directly onto bare Chalk Paint™.
    • Load a small amount of Dark Wax onto a Chalk Paint™ Wax Brush or clean cloth and work it into the surface in circular motions, paying particular attention to brushmarks, mouldings and crevices where the wax will settle to create an aged effect.
    • Work in small sections and wipe back any excess with a clean cloth before it dries. The more you wipe back, the subtler the effect.
    • Stand back and assess the effect as you go, you can build up gradually but it's easier to add more than to remove too much.
    • For a more dramatic aged effect, apply Dark Wax more generously into recesses and mouldings and wipe back lightly on raised areas to create natural-looking contrast.

    Applying black chalk paint™ wax

    • Apply a base coat of Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax first and allow to become touch dry, approximately one hour, before proceeding. Black Wax should always be used over Clear Wax.
    • Load a small amount of Black Wax onto a Chalk Paint™ Wax Brush or clean cloth and work into the surface using circular motions, focusing on texture, brushwork and mouldings to draw out depth and contrast.
    • Wipe off excess with a clean cloth, working in small sections to maintain control over the depth of colour. Black Wax is stronger than Dark Wax, use sparingly and build gradually.
    • Once satisfied with the effect, leave to dry fully before buffing lightly with a clean dry cloth if a slight sheen is desired.
    • Black Wax works particularly well on lighter paint colours where the contrast is most striking, and on heavily textured or carved pieces where it settles beautifully into the detail.

    Applying white chalk paint™ wax

    • White Wax can be applied directly over Chalk Paint™ to soften and lighten colours, or directly onto bare unvarnished wood to create a limed oak effect, no Clear Wax base coat is required for either application.
    • Load a small amount of White Wax onto a Chalk Paint™ Wax Brush or clean cloth and work into the surface using circular motions, ensuring it is pushed into the grain of the wood or texture of the paint.
    • Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth, working in small sections. The more you wipe back, the more subtle the lightening effect.
    • Allow to dry fully, then buff lightly with a clean dry cloth to finish.
    • For a limed oak look on bare wood, work the White Wax firmly into the grain with a stiff brush, then wipe back across the grain with a cloth to leave wax sitting in the wood's natural texture.
    Aftercare & Storage

Day-to-day, simply wipe waxed surfaces clean with a damp cloth. For tougher marks or stains, use a spray cleaner, then rewax the affected area to restore protection. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can break down the wax finish over time.

    FAQs

    Q. Do I need to use Chalk Paint™ Wax after painting with Chalk Paint™?

    A. Yes, wax (or lacquer) is an essential finishing step. Chalk Paint™ on its own is porous and unprotected, meaning it can mark, stain or wear without a sealant over the top. A thin coat of Clear Chalk Paint™ Wax seals the surface, protects the colour and adds a beautiful depth of finish. Dark, Black and White Waxes should always be used in combination with Clear Wax for full protection. For outdoor projects, use Chalk Paint™ Lacquer instead - wax is not suitable for exterior use.

    Q. Can I use more than one type of Chalk Paint™ Wax on the same piece?

    A. Absolutely, in fact, combining waxes is one of the most effective ways to achieve a rich, layered finish. The most common approach is to apply a base coat of Clear Wax first, then work Dark or Black Wax on top to settle into the brushmarks and mouldings, creating an aged, textured effect. White Wax can be used selectively to soften or lighten specific areas. Always allow each layer to become touch dry, approximately one hour, before applying the next, and buff back any excess with a clean cloth for the best results.
