In most cases, no preparation is needed - Chalk Paint™ adheres to almost any surface without sanding or priming.
- If you wish to clean your surface, use warm water only, avoid chemicals. Ensure all soap is fully removed and the surface is completely dry. Note: cleaning can sometimes activate old finishes.
- Perform a patch test before painting the full surface, Annie always recommends this step.
- Tip the tin upside down and shake well before opening, then stir thoroughly to ensure smooth, even colour.
When to prime first (rare)
- Heavily stained or dark oil-stained wood - apply clear shellac first to prevent yellow or red tones bleeding through. This includes red-stained wood and typical 1930s/40s furniture.
- Painting in a shade of white, stains may bleed through. Either use clear shellac as a sealer, or apply Chalk Paint™ in Athenian Black as a base coat to block stains.
When to sand first (rare)
- Highly polished surfaces, sand very lightly by hand to create a key for adhesion.
- Gloss paint - lightly hand-sand to create a key before applying Chalk Paint™.
- Laminate or melamine - sand very lightly by hand, then apply two thin coats of Chalk Paint™.
When sanding, always wear a dust mask and take appropriate health and safety precautions. Real teak and silicone cannot be painted with Chalk Paint™.
Always test the product on a small, inconspicuous area before full application to ensure compatibility and desired results.
- If the paint feels too thick, add a small amount of water and stir well until you reach the desired consistency.
- Apply with a good quality brush such as an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Brush for the best results. A roller or cloth can also be used.
- One to two coats are usually sufficient. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next. One litre covers approximately 13 sq metres - roughly a small welsh dresser.
- For a wash effect, thin the paint with more water. For an impasto/textured finish, leave the lid off overnight to thicken the paint before applying.
- You can paint Chalk Paint™ directly over previously waxed Chalk Paint™ without stripping the prior finish.
- Always finish with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Wax or Lacquer to seal and protect your surface.
- Clear Wax - subtle sheen and protection. Dark/Black Wax - aged, antique effect. White Wax - limed, Nordic look.
Q. Do I need to sand or prime before using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™?
A. Almost never. One of the biggest advantages of Chalk Paint™ is that it adheres to almost any surface without any preparation - no sanding, no priming, no stripping. Simply shake the tin, stir well, and paint. There are a small number of exceptions: highly polished surfaces, gloss paint, laminate, and certain stained woods may benefit from light sanding or a shellac primer, but for the vast majority of projects you can paint straight away.
Q. How many coats of Chalk Paint™ do I need, and how much will one tin cover?
A. One litre of Chalk Paint™ covers approximately 13 square metres - roughly the equivalent of a small welsh dresser or china hutch. For most projects, one to two coats is all you need, and in many cases a single coat gives full, beautiful coverage. Always finish with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Wax or Lacquer to seal and protect the surface once you're done.
Delivery - All orders placed on a working day before 3pm will be dispatched on the same day for next working day delivery. Orders placed before 3pm on Friday will be delivered on Monday (excluding bank holidays). Orders placed after 3pm on Friday, weekends and Bank Holidays will be dispatched on the next working day.

However, due to their bespoke nature, please allow up to an additional 5 working days to accommodate any potential courier delays or delivery issues before receiving a refund or replacement.
