Tinted Colour Information
Tinted paint is custom mixed in house at Next Day Paint using our Tikkurila tinting machine. We mix the paint on site, which means we can offer our usual fast delivery with no extra delay.
Tinted Colour Match paints can't be cancelled or returned as they are tinted to order.
Note: Depending on the amount of colourant required to mix your chosen colour, there may be up to a 10% variant on the advertised paint volume.
A tinted primer can be used to help obtain the true depth of colour for your top coat or to reduce the amount of coats required when a drastic colour change is occurring. A tinted primer will not necessarily be the same colour as your selected topcoat. It will be tinted towards the topcoat colour and generally lighter in shade. For example if your topcoat is black your primer may be a shade of grey. If you are unsure about when a tinted primer is required please contact us and we can advise further.

- Let dry.
- Remove loose, flaking paint or lacquer with a scraper and sand the whole surface.
- Repair any cracks or holes with PRESTO Rapid Filler or other appropriate filler.
- Remove sanding dust before starting painting.
Always test a small area of the surface to be painted to ensure you are happy with the finished results
- Stir Helmi Primer well before use and thin with water, if necessary.
- Apply 1 coat by brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For large surface, it is recommended to apply with a roller and then level with a brush.
- For absorbent surfaces, prime first with primer thinned with 5-10% water, and sand. After 2 hours paint the surface with unthinned primer.
- Top coat can be applied after 5 hours.
Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the tin
Store the paint in dry conditions and protect from extremes of temperature
After use firmly secure the lid.
If needed, at the earliest after approx. 1 month from painting: Clean the surface with a neutral (pH 6-8) dishwashing solution and a soft brush, sponge or cleaning cloth. Clean very dirty surfaces with a lightly alkaline (pH 8-10) dishwashing solution and with cleaning cloth or sponge. Rinse the surface carefully. The surfaces must be handled with care during few weeks after finishing as the paint will reach its final hardness in normal circumstances after one month. If the surfaces need to be cleansed soon after finishing they must be cleansed lightly with a soft brush or a damp cleaning cloth.
Q. Why are tinted primers a different shade to the top coat?
A. Tinted primers are often a different shade than the top coat paint for several reasons:
- Enhanced Coverage: The primary purpose of a primer is to provide a uniform base for the top coat. A tinted primer, while not an exact match to the top coat, is typically formulated to be a complementary colour that helps improve the coverage of the final paint.
- Improved Adhesion: Tinted primers help improve the adhesion of the top coat by providing a surface that is more compatible with the colour and texture of the final paint. This enhances the longevity and durability of the finish.
- Colour Enhancement: The tint in the primer is chosen to enhance or complement the top coat colour, helping to bring out the true hue of the finish. In many cases, this will result in the primer being a slightly lighter or different shade to avoid altering the final colour's vibrancy.
- Sealing and Stain Blocking: Tinted primers often have added stain-blocking properties, and their colour may be adjusted to help conceal underlying stains or imperfections. The lighter shade can provide better concealment without interfering with the top coat's appearance.
- Full Top Coat Coverage: The primer's colour is intentionally different to ensure complete coverage of the top coat, enhancing its appearance and ensuring the surface benefits from the top coat's protective properties.
In summary, the tinted primer’s purpose is to improve the finish, not to match the top coat exactly, which is why it may appear as a lighter or different shade.
Q.What is the recommended Tikkurila primer for a previously painted wood?
Ans.Helmi Primer is perfect for preparing both previously painted and new timber surfaces before applying water-based topcoats. Occasionally, the adhesion may be compromised by existing paint on woodwork. In such situations, Otex Primer is a suitable choice as it adheres well to more challenging substrates.
