Owatrol Textrol is a high-performance, penetrating wood oil designed to protect and enhance exterior softwood and hardwood surfaces. Suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications, Textrol soaks deep into the timber to protect from within, unlike surface films that peel or flake over time.
Its advanced formula provides long-lasting defence against moisture, UV rays, and weathering while enhancing the wood’s natural grain and colour. With a mildew-resistant finish and a time-saving wet-on-wet application, Textrol is ideal for everything from decking and cladding to garden furniture and fences.
- Saturates the wood to prevent peeling, flaking and moisture damage
- Wet-on-Wet Application
- No sanding needed

New wood surfaces
New wood surfaces have a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze which prevents maximum penetration and bonding of any finish. To properly prepare the surface for application, and minimise splitting, swelling, cupping and checking caused by exposure to the sun and rain, first treat with Seasonite and allow the wood to weather for 6-12 months before applying Textrol.
Weathered wood surfaces
All surfaces must first be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime and mildew. If any mildew is present, treat it with a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Scrub the solution on to the surface and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly. Clean weathered wood with Net-Trol to remove the loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants. If necessary sand the surface after cleaning (80 grit paper). After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before finishing.
Previously oiled surfaces
Textrol may only be applied to bare wood surfaces or a weathered wood that was previously finished with Textrol. All other oils or sealers must be completely and thoroughly removed with a wood oil remover such as Owatrol’s Aquanett and then the surface must be cleaned and neutralised with Net-Trol before applying Textrol. If necessary sand the surface after cleaning and stripping (80 grit paper). After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before finishing.
Previously coated surfaces
Textrol may only be applied to bare wood surfaces or a weathered wood surface that was previously finished with Textrol. All previous coating must be completely and thoroughly removed with a stripper such as Owatrol’s Dilunett and neutralised with Net-Trol before applying Textrol. If necessary sand the surface after cleaning and stripping (80 grit paper). After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before finishing.
Apply the first coat of Textrol and allow it to penetrate into the wood (15-30 minutes). Apply a second application and allow it to penetrate for 15-30 minutes. If required repeat this procedure until the wood is saturated i.e. will accept no more oil. Do not allow Textrol to become touch dry or dry between coats. Once the timber is saturated, brush out or wipe up any excess product that has not penetrated to avoid shiny spots. NOTE: Textrol is not a surface coating, its place is in the wood not on the surface.
Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the tin
Q.Can Textrol Clear be applied to new wood?
A:No. It is important to let new wood weather for at least 12 months. This weathering process breaks down mill glaze, allows excess moisture to escape, and opens the grain so Textrol can penetrate properly. It also allows natural chemical extractives (tannins) in the wood, which cause staining, to escape. Use Seasonite to protect and stabilize the wood during its weathering period.
Q.Can Textrol be applied to previously oiled surfaces?
A: Textrol should only be applied to bare wood surfaces or weathered wood that has been previously finished with Textrol. Any other oils or sealers must be entirely removed using a wood oil remover like Owatrol’s Aquanett. Following this, the surface must be cleaned and neutralized with Net-Trol before applying Textrol. If needed, sand the surface after cleaning and stripping using 80 grit paper. Allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days after cleaning before finishing.
Q. How often should Textrol be applied to decks, horizontal surfaces,, and what maintenance steps are recommended?
A: Most decks and horizontal surfaces only require a maintenance application of Textrol every other year. A single application every other year is sufficient to refresh the natural beauty and maintain the protection of the deck or horizontal surface. To renew the appearance of the wood, periodically clean the surface with Net-Trol to remove dirt and contamination between applications.
Q. How often should Textrol be applied to cladding, and other vertical surfaces?
A: Most cladding and vertical surfaces generally only need touch-up applications of Textrol. When areas treated with Textrol turn grey, clean them with Net-Trol. and apply a single application of Textrol to replace the material that has weathered out. Areas that retain good color do not need a maintenance application. Badly weathered areas may require two applications of Textrol, applying the second coat as soon as the first has penetrated the wood. Surfaces exposed to harsh sun and weather conditions may wear more quickly. If this occurs, clean the affected areas with Net-Trol and apply Textrol as necessary, blending into areas that still retain good color.
Q. When can I apply Textrol?
A: Apply Textrol when the ambient temperature is between 5°C and 35°C. Do not apply if cold or wet weather is expected within 24 hours. Avoid applying in direct sunlight, as applying Textrol to hot wood limits its penetration.
