Preparation
Always ensure the surface to be treated is clean, dry, and free from any dust, algae, fungi, or moss.
• To clean decking give it a good brush with a stiff broom to remove any dirt, debris, or loose wood
• Check the surface of the decking for loose screws or boards and ensure these are tightened
• If the decking has been previously stained, painted, or varnished, we would recommend stripping it back to the bare wood. For previously stained decking you can use Ronseal Garden Decking Stripper
• If your decking has been affected by algae, fungi, or mould it can be cleaned with Liberon Tough Deck Clean and Revive
Note: Most new decks come with a bit of waterproofing protection. This could stop the stain from sticking. To avoid this, give your new deck a good scrub with Liberon Tough Deck Clean and Revive. Alternatively, leave it to weather for six months.
Application
Before applying the product test a small area on the surface to be oiled to ensure you are happy with the finished results. Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour.
• Stir well before use
Softwoods
• Apply with a brush or roller
• Apply the oil generously and allow to penetrate for 15 to 30 minutes
• Apply a second coat
• Continue to apply until the timber no longer absorbs the oil, older timbers may require more quotes depending on the condition
• Wipe off any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth
• Allow to dry for 24 - 48 hours before use
Hardwoods
• For new hardwoods leave exposed for 12 months before applying a finish
• Apply in very thin coats with a clean cloth
• Remove any unabsorbed oil off the timber with a lint-free cloth
• Apply further coats until wood no longer absorbs the oil
Note: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin.
