Before anything else, all surfaces must be clean, dry, sound, and free from dust, dirt, grease, oil, loose material, or any other contaminants that might interfere with adhesion.
- Use a stiff brush or pressure washer to remove dirt and debris.
- Degrease using a suitable cleaner if there's any oil or grease present, and allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.
Preparing Concrete (New or Existing)
Concrete is a common substrate for floor paint, but it needs special attention. Power floated, granolithic, or very smooth concrete finishes are too smooth for paint to grip properly. You’ll need to roughen the surface to create a "key" a texture the paint can bond to.
- Mechanical methods: Use abrasion or shot blasting for an effective physical key.
- Chemical method: Apply Coo-Var Acid Etch. This not only etches the surface but also helps remove dirt and laitance (a weak layer of cement and fine particles that can hinder adhesion).
- New concrete: Allow it to cure fully for up to 3 months before applying any paint. Painting too early can lead to poor adhesion and peeling.
Preparing Other Surfaces (Wood, Metal, Asphalt, Tarmac)
- Wood: Sand to smooth rough areas and remove any old coatings. Ensure it is dry and free from rot or contamination.
- Metal: Clean thoroughly, degrease, and remove any rust. Apply a suitable primer for metal before painting.
- Asphalt and Tarmac: Ensure the surface is stable and free from oil or bitumen bleed. Old tarmac may need priming depending on the condition.
- Use the appropriate primer for your surface .
Repainting Existing Painted Surfaces
If you're painting over an existing coating, take the following steps:
- Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly.
- Sand down the surface to dull the gloss and create a good "key" for the new paint to bond to.
- Remove all loose or flaking paint using a scraper or sander.
- Treat exposed bare patches as new surfaces, follow the appropriate preparation method for that substrate before applying the paint.
Final Tips
- Always do a test patch on a small area to check adhesion and finish before committing to the entire floor.
- Use painter’s tape to mask off areas you don’t want to paint.
- Ensure the area is well-ventilated during preparation and application.
With the right preparation, you’ll get a beautiful, hard-wearing finish that stands up to everyday wear and tear. A little effort before painting makes a world of difference after.
To achieve the best results and ensure a long-lasting, professional finish, it's important to follow good painting practice. Here's everything you need to know about applying Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint.
- Do not apply if the temperature is or is expected to drop below 7°C during application or drying.
- In confined or enclosed areas, ensure there is adequate ventilation to assist drying and maintain safe working conditions.
- Stir the paint thoroughly before and during use to ensure consistency.
- Apply using a brush, roller, or spray (as appropriate for your project).
- Apply evenly and avoid over-application to prevent pooling or uneven finish.
Priming and Preceding Coats
Depending on the surface type, apply the appropriate base coat:
- Wood: Apply Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint directly no primer required.
- Metal: First, apply Coo-Var All Metals Primer before applying floor paint.
- All other unpainted surfaces (e.g. concrete, asphalt, tarmac): Use Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint thinned 5% with clean water as a priming coat.
- Subsequent Coats: once the first coat is fully dry (typically a few hours depending on conditions), apply a second coat of Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint unthinned.
- Two coats are generally recommended for optimal coverage and durability.
- Recoat in 16 hours and hard dry in 12 hours.
- It will achieve full hardness in 5-7 days.
Q. Is Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint durable?
A. Acrylic floor paint is known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, abrasion, and impacts. It forms a hard, protective coating that helps to extend the lifespan of the floor.
Q. Is Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint slip resistant?
A. No, this is a durable and hard wearing floor paint but it is not slip resistant. We would recommend using a product like Coo-Var Anti Slip Acrylic Floor Paint as it is still an acrylic based paint but with an added aggregate for slip resistance.
