Note: For light and mid-tone paint colours, Benjamin Moore recommends using a white primer. If you choose a light or mid-tone colour, a white primer will be provided to ensure the best coverage and finish.

Tinted Colour Information

Tinted paint is custom mixed in house at Next Day Paint using our Benjamin Moore tinting machine. We mix the paint on site, which means we can offer our usual fast delivery with no extra delay. Tinted Colour Match paints can't be cancelled or returned as they are tinted to order.

A tinted primer can be used to help obtain the true depth of colour for your top coat or to reduce the amount of coats required when a drastic colour change is occurring. A tinted primer will not necessarily be the same colour as your selected topcoat. It will be tinted towards the topcoat colour and generally lighter in shade. For example if your topcoat is black your primer may be a shade of grey. If you are unsure about when a tinted primer is required please contact us and we can advise further.

Preparation

Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, scaling paint, water soluble materials, and mildew.

  • Remove any peeling or scaling paint and sand these areas to feather edges smooth with adjacent surfaces.
  • Glossy areas should be dulled.
  • Drywall surfaces must be free of sanding dust.
  • New plaster or masonry surfaces must be allowed to cure before applying base coat. Cured plaster should be hard, have a slight sheen and maximum PH of 10; soft, porous or powdery plaster indicates improper cure. Never sand a plaster surface; knife off any protrusions and prime plaster before and after applying patching compound.
  • Poured or pre-cast concrete with a very smooth surface should be etched or abraded to promote adhesion, after removing all form release agents and curing compounds.
  • Remove any powder or loose particles before priming.
  • Wood substrates must be thoroughly dry.
  • Caution: Smooth planed clapboards or siding must be sanded thoroughly to break the “mill glaze” allowing proper penetration and adhesion.

Difficult Substrates: If the surfaces to be painted exhibit severe tannin or smoke staining, an alkyd based Benjamin Moore primer may be your best choice for conquering these severe conditions. See Datasheet for more informations.

Application

Always test a small area of the surface to be treated to ensure compatibility

  • Stir thoroughly before use.
  • Apply one or two coats. (2 coats of primer may be required in severe cases; allow the primer to dry thoroughly for best results.)
  • On hard, non-porous surfaces, such as glazed ceramics and prefinished metal, maximum adhesion and hardness may take 3-4 days to develop
  • Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer is the preferred primer in most situations. New surfaces should be fully primed, and previously painted surfaces may be primed or spot primed as necessary. For best hiding results use Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer tinted to the approximate finish coat colour.
  • For best results, use a Benjamin Moore Professional custom-blended nylon/polyester brush, Benjamin Moore Professional roller, or a similar product
  • This product can also be sprayed. Airless Pressure: 1,500-2,500 psi; Tip: 0.013-0.017

Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the tin

Note: Certain custom colours require a Deep Colour Base Primer tinted to a special prescription formula to achieve the desired colour.

Fresh Start is not recommended for sealing knots or over pine sap.

Reviews
FAQs

Q. Why are tinted primers a different shade to the top coat?

A. Tinted primers are often a different shade than the top coat paint for several reasons:

  • Enhanced Coverage: The primary purpose of a primer is to provide a uniform base for the top coat. A tinted primer, while not an exact match to the top coat, is typically formulated to be a complementary colour that helps improve the coverage of the final paint.
  • Improved Adhesion: Tinted primers help improve the adhesion of the top coat by providing a surface that is more compatible with the colour and texture of the final paint. This enhances the longevity and durability of the finish.
  • Colour Enhancement: The tint in the primer is chosen to enhance or complement the top coat colour, helping to bring out the true hue of the finish. In many cases, this will result in the primer being a slightly lighter or different shade to avoid altering the final colour's vibrancy.
  • Sealing and Stain Blocking: Tinted primers often have added stain-blocking properties, and their colour may be adjusted to help conceal underlying stains or imperfections. The lighter shade can provide better concealment without interfering with the top coat's appearance.
  • Full Top Coat Coverage: The primer's colour is intentionally different to ensure complete coverage of the top coat, enhancing its appearance and ensuring the surface benefits from the top coat's protective properties.

In summary, the tinted primer’s purpose is to improve the finish, not to match the top coat exactly, which is why it may appear as a lighter or different shade.

Q: What is the best Benjamin Moore paint to use for trim?

A: For a professional-looking finish on trim, start with an acrylic primer like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start High-Hiding All-Purpose Primer to ensure strong adhesion and a smooth, even base. Once fully dry, follow with a waterborne alkyd paint such as Benjamin Moore Advance Interior, which applies smoothly, cures to a durable, furniture-quality finish, and is available in a wide range of colours.

Q: How many coats of paint should I apply when repainting trim?

A: It depends on the condition of your trim. If you've carried out major repairs, start with a primer like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start to create a solid foundation. After that, apply one or two coats of paint, depending on the desired coverage and finish.
