Proper preparation is essential for a durable, long-lasting finish. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, wax, resin, and timber extractives. After initial cleaning, wash surfaces with warm water and mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry.
Timber Surfaces
- Low Grade or Resinous Timber: Treat resinous knots by drilling out and filling, or apply a suitable blocking primer.
- New or Bare Wood: Grey or denatured timber should be sanded back to a clean, bright, sound surface. Degrease with methylated spirits using a lint-free cloth. If necessary, treat with Sadolin Quick Dry Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to freshly cut end grains. Fill small holes with Sadolin Woodfiller and sand in the direction of the grain.
- Previously Varnished Surfaces: Strip back to bare wood and treat as new wood.
- Previously Painted or Woodstained Surfaces: Remove any loose or flaking coating with a scraper or abrasive paper. Grey or weathered timber, or surfaces in poor condition, should be sanded back to a bright, sound surface and treated as new wood. Do not use wire wool. Sound glossy surfaces should be flattened to provide a good key. Clean as described above.
Other Surfaces
- Weathered Plastic and Composite Surfaces: Flatten smooth, shiny surfaces using a Scotch-Brite pad to create a key. Clean as above.
- Metal Surfaces: Suitable for steel. Remove all rust and residues, then prime bare metal with Sandtex Trade Rust Inhibiting Primer Undercoat.
- Concrete, Masonry, Brick, Stone: Remove loose or flaking coating with a scraper or stiff bristle brush (avoid wire brushes). Remove organic growth using Sandtex Fungicidal Wash. Fill small cracks with Sandtex Ready Mixed Filler. Stabilise bare, filled, or previously decorated chalking areas with Sandtex Trade Quick Dry Stabilising Solution. New concrete must be cured for at least 30 days before coating. Clean glossy painted surfaces as described above.
Precautions: Do not paint white UPVC with dark colours. Work in well-ventilated areas. Use suitable personal protective equipment. Avoid inhaling dust; wear a face mask if dry sanding. For detailed guidance, consult the technical datasheet.
Always carry out a small trial before starting. The final colour and coverage depend on the original surface colour, condition, and number of coats applied. For consistent colour, intermix multiple packs before use. Stir thoroughly before and during application.
- Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. Do not apply in damp conditions, when rain is imminent, or at temperatures below 8ºC or above 25ºC.
- Apply using a synthetic brush, roller, or airless spray. For spray application, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your equipment.
- Sand lightly between coats if the grain raises.Use 180–220 grit sandpaper. This lightly smooths the raised grain that can appear after the first coat without cutting through the paint layer.
- For new and bare wood apply 3 coats for optimum protection and finish.
- For weathered and maintenance apply 2-3 coats depending on the degree of weathering.
Following these steps ensures a durable, smooth, and long-lasting finish with Sadolin Superdec Satin.
