    Overview

Rustins White Knotting is a fast-drying solution designed to seal knots, resinous areas and creosoted timber, preventing discolouration and resin bleed through the paint film. Suitable for use on bare wood, it creates an effective barrier that ensures a clean, professional finish when painting.

Easy to apply with a brush, White Knotting should be applied liberally over knots and the surrounding area. Resinous and creosoted timbers should be fully sealed with two coats. Once applied, the surface should not be sanded. The product dries in around one hour and is ready for priming. Brushes can be cleaned using methylated spirits.

    Preparation

Ensure the surface is clean, bare and thoroughly sanded smooth before application.

    • All dust, grease and surface contaminants should be removed to allow the knotting solution to bond effectively.
    • Knotting is designed to prevent paint discolouration caused by resin bleed and is not intended to restrain excessive resin.
    • If resin is present, remove any excess by gently heating the knot with a heat gun and wiping away the resin before decorating.
    • Where cracks, holes or gaps exist around the knot, fill with Rustins Wood Filler, allow it to dry completely, then sand smooth to create an even surface.
    • Once prepared, the surface is ready for the application of knotting.
    Application

Preform a test to ensure compatibility with the surface. Always follow the manufacturers instructions found on the packaging.

    • Using a brush, apply the knotting solution liberally over the knot and the surrounding area to ensure complete sealing.
    • Two coats are recommended for best results, particularly on resinous timber.
    • Do not sand the surface after the knotting has been applied.
    • Allow approximately 1 hour between coats.
    • After the final coat, leave for at least 1 hour before applying a primer or further decorative coatings.
    • Apply in temperatures between 15–25°C. Do not use below 10°C or in conditions of high humidity.
    • Approximately 10-12 m² per litre per coat, depending on the absorbency of the surface.
