Proper surface preparation ensures the best results when using Rustins Danish Oil.
- Ensure the wood is clean, smooth, dry, and free from dust, wax, or other contaminants.
- For woods such as Teak or Iroko, scrub the surface with white spirit or Rustins Surface Cleaner using a scouring pad.
- Wipe away the residue while still wet using clean rags.
- Any existing paint or varnish should be removed with Rustins Strypit Paint and Varnish Stripper.
- Bare wood may be treated with Rustins Wood Dye before applying Danish Oil to achieve the desired colour.
- Avoid applying Danish Oil over surfaces treated with knotting.
- Prior application of Rustins Advanced Clear Wood Preserver is recommended for exterior woodwork.
Following these steps ensures the wood is ready to absorb the oil evenly, producing a smooth, natural, and durable satin finish.
Always test a small area of the surface to be painted to ensure you are happy with the finished results.
- Use a clean rag or brush to apply Rustins Danish Oil liberally onto the wood surface.
- After a few minutes, wipe off any excess oil with a clean rag to prevent sticky or uneven patches.
- To achieve a perfectly smooth finish, gently rub the final coat with a scouring pad in the direction of the grain, then wipe away any surplus with clean rags or paper towels.
- Apply 3 coats to bare wood for best results. Additional coats can be applied to achieve deeper protection or richer colour.
- Allow 4–6 hours for drying, depending on temperature and humidity.
- Re-coat once the previous coat is fully dry.
- Ideal application temperature is 15–25°C. Avoid applying below 5°C to ensure proper drying and penetration.
