    Overview

A new kitchen can cost thousands. Repainting the one you already have costs a fraction of that, and with Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint, it's a weekend job rather than a fortnight of dust sheets and disruption.

This is a paint built specifically for the demands of a working kitchen. It bonds directly to the surfaces most cupboard doors are actually made from, wood, existing gloss, old varnish and melamine, so there's no stripping back, no lengthy sanding session and no separate primer or topcoat stage. Straight onto the door, two coats, done.

Where it really earns its place is durability. Rust-Oleum have tested the finish to ISO 11998 Class 1 for wet scrub resistance, the top rating, which in practical terms means you can clean it properly and repeatedly without wearing through the colour. It shrugs off the knocks that cupboard doors take around handles and hinges, and resists staining from the usual kitchen offenders, coffee, tea, ketchup, mustard, cooking oil. A water-repellent quality in the formula encourages spills to sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so most marks lift with a quick wipe.
    • Class 1 wet scrub rated - scrubbable, scuff resistant and water resistant
    • Goes straight onto wood, melamine, gloss and previously painted or varnished surfaces
    • No sanding, no primer, no topcoat required
    • Low VOC (max 20g/l)
    • Also suitable for drawers, furniture, doors and trim

Note: Interior use only. Not for worktops, baths, or direct application to metal.

    Preparation

Painting your kitchen cupboards is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost changes you can make to a home. The finish you end up with, though, depends far more on what happens before the tin is opened than on the painting itself. Kitchen doors carry an invisible film of cooking grease, and no paint will bond through it.

Work through the steps below and you'll get an ultra-durable, scrubbable finish that stands up to a busy kitchen.

    Preparing Your Kitchen Cupboards

    • Remove the doors and drawer fronts
    • Unscrew the doors and drawer fronts and lay them flat if you have room
    • Working flat prevents runs and makes the edges far easier
    • Label each hinge and its position so refitting is straightforward

    Clean and degrease the surface

    • The surface must be clean, dry and free from contamination before you paint.
    • Wash everything down with sugar soap or an equivalent degreaser
    • Work into corners, around handles and along the top edges of wall units, where grease builds up most
    • Rinse the surface afterwards with clean water
    • Allow the doors to dry completely

    Remove any wax or oil

    • If wax or oil has previously been used on the item, sugar soap will not remove it
    • Clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit instead
    • Let the solvent evaporate fully before moving on
    • Abrade hard and glossy surfaces
    • If you are painting over a hard, glossy or previously painted surface, abrade it before application
    • Use fine abrasive paper and light pressure - the goal is to remove the sheen, not the existing finish
    • Remove all sanding dust with a vacuum and a damp cloth

Prime where stain bleed is a risk

    • Kitchen Cupboard Paint is not a stain-blocking product.
    • Prime any surfaces where stain bleed may be an issue, including knots
    • Bare metal should not be painted directly - use a suitable metal primer first
    • If you are unsure about a surface, test on an inconspicuous area before painting
    Application

The temperature at the time of application and during drying should be greater than 10°C. Keep the room warm throughout, a cold kitchen will significantly extend drying times.

    • Stir the paint before use and stir again between coats to keep colour and finish consistent
    • The product may be applied by brush or roller
    • By brush: apply evenly, following the grain of the wood
    • By roller: use a short to medium nap mohair roller
    • On shaker or panelled doors, work the mouldings and recesses first, then the centre panel, then the outer frame
    • Keep coats thin and even rather than heavy
    • Two coats are recommended
    • The paint may be overcoated after 4 hours
    • Refit the doors once the paint is hard dry
    • Full cure is achieved after 7 days - take extra care during use in this time
