Water-Based
2K-POLY86 is a professional-grade two-pack, water-based polyurethane varnish built for the toughest wooden floors and interior timber surfaces. Supplied as a complete kit with varnish and hardener, it's engineered for industrial-level performance, combining outstanding chemical and abrasion resistance with a hard-wearing, long-lasting finish that's equally at home in busy commercial spaces or high-use areas at home.
The two-pack, water-based technology gives you the best of both worlds: the extreme durability of a reactive coating with the easier handling and clean-up of a water-based product. Once cured, it stands up to heavy foot traffic, chemicals, stains and general wear, while still allowing floors and surfaces to be brought back into use in a matter of hours rather than days.
Available in 1.1L and 4.4L kits, and in dead flat, satin or gloss finishes, 2K-POLY86 is suited to demanding environments such as schools, hospitals, shopping centres, bars, restaurants and dance halls, as well as furniture, cabinetry, joinery and shop-fitting projects that need a genuinely industrial finish.
- Professional two-pack, water-based polyurethane formula

- Waterproof once fully cured

- Allow the floor or timber surface to fully acclimatise to the temperature and humidity of the room it will be used in before starting work.
- Sand the surface thoroughly, then remove all sanding dust, oil, wax and any other contamination so the varnish can bond properly.
- Strip back any surface previously treated with wax, polish or similar products to bare wood, sanding to at least 120 grit, as these cannot simply be overcoated.
- Carry out a small test area before treating the whole surface: apply the product, leave it to set for 3 days, then gently scratch the finish with a coin to check adhesion.
- Only proceed with the full application once the test area shows the coating is firmly attached, as poor preparation or an untested surface can lead to adhesion failure.
- Bring both the varnish and hardener to room temperature, ideally between 18–25°C, before mixing.
- Mix the varnish (Component A) with the hardener (Component B) at a ratio of 100ml hardener per 1 litre of varnish (or 400ml per 4 litres), stirring mechanically and thoroughly without introducing air.
- Once combined, do not reseal the container, and use the mixed product within its 4-hour open time.
- Apply a full, even coat using a suitable applicator such as a short-pile microfibre roller, floor pad or T-bar, working with the grain and starting at the edges; use a synthetic brush for cutting in around edges and corners.
- Apply a minimum of 2 coats, adding a third coat in areas subject to heavy wear or traffic.
- Re-stir the mixed product regularly during application to keep it consistent, again taking care not to introduce air.
- Work systematically across the whole area to keep the coating thickness even throughout.
- Recoat after 4 hours where possible; if more than 24 hours passes between coats, lightly sand with 120 grit before applying the next one.
- Maintain a working environment between 18–25°C with 35–65% relative humidity for the best results, and ensure good ventilation throughout.
Once the final coat is applied, the surface is generally ready for light use after 12 hours, but full chemical resistance and maximum hardness are only reached after 72 hours. During the first 3 days, avoid placing rugs, heavy furniture or objects on the surface, and hold off on cleaning to allow the coating to cure fully. Be aware that plasticisers in items such as carpet underlay, furniture legs, castors and certain adhesives can cause softening or discolouration if left in contact with the surface, so use protective pads or avoid direct contact where possible. Wipe up any spills promptly, as they can leave cosmetic marks or damage if left unattended.
Store unopened varnish and hardener containers upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children, ideally between 18–25°C. Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use, and once the varnish and hardener have been combined, use the mixture within its open time rather than trying to store it, as mixed product should not be resealed or kept for later use.
