Overview

Osmo Oil Stain is a high-performance wood finish designed for commercial and heavy-use areas. Formulated to deliver deep, rich colour tones, it enhances the natural character of wood while providing superior protection. When combined with Osmo Oil Stain Hardener, it offers especially fast drying times, making it ideal for time-sensitive projects.

Suitable for all wood types, including tropical hardwoods, this stain is extremely durable, highly water and dirt resistant, and stands up to everyday wear. The finish prevents cracking, peeling, or flaking and is resistant to common spillages and is safe for children’s toys and interior furnishings.

Preparation

Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and frost-free before starting. The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 18%, as excess moisture can affect penetration and finish quality.

Osmo Oil Stain is ready to use and should not be thinned. Stir thoroughly before application to ensure an even colour and consistency.

All existing finishes must be properly prepared:

  • Old microporous stains should be cleaned thoroughly.
  • Paints and lacquers must be completely removed.
  • When sanding, it is recommended to wear a dust mask for protection.

Before sanding, repair any imperfections in the wood:

  • Fill small cracks, larger joints, or holes using Osmo Wood Filler to achieve a smooth surface.
  • Sand the wood carefully to create the correct surface profile, begin with coarse sandpaper. Complete final sanding using P120–150 grit for flooring and P220–240 grit for furniture.
  • After sanding, remove all dust thoroughly with a broom or vacuum.

The final appearance of the finished surface depends on several factors, including wood type and condition. For this reason, a trial application is always recommended, particularly when working on unfamiliar surfaces.

Application

Transparent colour application:

  • Apply very thinly and evenly to clean, dry wood along the wood grain using an Osmo Floor Brush, Osmo Microfibre Roller 100mm or 250mm, Oil Finish Applicator Fleece (Hand Pad Holder), or Double Blade Scraper.
  • Rub into the wood using a white pad. For larger areas, use the Osmo FloorXcenter with a white pad to achieve an even colour tone.
  • Allow to dry for approximately 12 hours with good ventilation.

Intensive colour application:

  • For a stronger colour result, apply thinly along the wood grain using an Osmo Microfibre Roller 100mm or 250mm or Osmo Floor Brush and spread well.
  • Please note that Osmo Oil Stain penetrates quickly; on highly absorbent (“thirsty”) woods, hand application may appear patchy.
  • Trial applications are strongly recommended. For best results, rub the stain into the wood using a white pad.

Tips

  • Using an unused Osmo Microfibre Roller 100mm or 250mm, any visible brushstrokes can be removed within 30 minutes after application.
  • Ensure good ventilation during drying.
  • If an even more intensive colour is desired, apply a second coat using an Osmo Double Blade Scraper, Osmo Microfibre Roller 100mm or 250mm, or Osmo Floor Brush, and rub into the wood with a white pad.
  • Ensure the first coat of Osmo Oil Stain has fully dried before applying and rubbing in the second coat.
  • After thorough drying, a top coat must be applied using a clear Osmo Polyx®-Oil.
  • For smaller areas, such as furniture, Osmo Oil Stain can be applied using a lint-free cloth. Optional applications using Hardener for Oil Stain 6631 as a drying accelerator are also possible. Always observe the product instructions for correct application.
  • Dark woods and hardwoods rich in extractives: For wood species such as Wenge, Merbau, or Jatoba, we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin or Osmo Polyx®-Oil 2K Pure. A trial application is recommended.
  • Colour tone 3501 White: An intensive white surface is not recommended for flooring, as it is more sensitive and prone to natural yellowing. As a top coat, the pigmented Polyx®-Oils 3040 or 3240 (White transparent) are recommended.
  • Colour tone 3519 Natural: Apply one thin coat using an Osmo Microfibre Roller or Floor Brush. After drying, apply a top coat with a clear Osmo Polyx®-Oil. This finish preserves the natural colour of the wood without enhancing it and does not create a permanent wet effect. Please note that this colour tone may leave white streaks on red or dark wood species.
  • Note: Always follow the manufacturer instructions found on the tin.

Aftercare & Storage

Regular Cleaning: Dust mopping using the green Dust-Mop from the Osmo Mop Cleaning Kit for Floors. Damp mopping using Osmo Wash and Care or Osmo Spray-Mop.

Occasional Maintenance: Intensive cleaning and refreshing using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner or Osmo Maintenance Oil.

Recoating: Simply re-apply one coat onto the clean and dry surface when signs of wear become visible.
