Liberon Gilt Cream is a versatile, decorative gilding cream suitable for retouching worn or damaged gilding and for applying a rich metallic finish to new surfaces. Whether restoring an antique frame, refreshing ornate plasterwork, or adding a gilded accent to a decorative piece, Gilt Cream delivers professional results with minimal effort.
Applied with a cotton cloth or small brush, the cream works into fine details and intricate areas with ease. All colours in the Liberon Gilt Cream range are fully intermixable, giving you the flexibility to blend and match existing gilding or create a completely bespoke finish. For best results, apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat and buff to a shine once dry.

Correct preparation ensures the best possible finish and adhesion of the Gilt Cream.
- Porous surfaces (wood, plaster): Seal the surface before applying Gilt Cream to prevent uneven absorption and ensure a consistent finish.
- All surfaces: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and completely free from dust before application.
- Test first: Always test the product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area to check colour, compatibility, and the end result before proceeding.
- Prepare the surface as described above - sealed, clean, and dry.
- Apply the Gilt Cream using a cotton cloth for flat or larger areas, or a small brush for intricate and detailed sections.
- Apply thin coats: For the best finish, apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, allowing each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
- Allow to dry for a minimum of four hours - longer if possible.
- Finish: Leave with a matt appearance or buff gently to achieve a shine.
- Clean tools immediately after use with white spirit.
Note: Gilt Cream can be revived or thinned with turpentine or good quality white spirit if it becomes too thick during use.
Once fully cured, gilded surfaces should be kept clean and dry. Avoid excessive handling of gilded areas, as natural skin oils can dull the finish over time. If the finish becomes worn or damaged, Gilt Cream can be reapplied directly to the affected area - all colours are intermixable, making it straightforward to blend and match existing gilding.
If the Gilt Cream in the pot thickens or begins to dry out between uses, it can be revived by adding a small amount of turpentine or good quality white spirit and mixing thoroughly.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Keep the lid firmly closed after use to prevent the product from drying out.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not dispose of residues or tool-cleaning solvents down the sink, toilet, drain, or in general waste - dispose of responsibly to avoid discharge into the environment.
Q. Can Liberon Gilt Cream colours be mixed together?
A. Yes, all colours in the Liberon Gilt Cream range are fully intermixable. This makes it easy to blend shades and achieve a closer match to existing gilding, or to create a completely bespoke colour. We recommend testing any mixed colour on a spare surface or inconspicuous area before applying to the main project.
Q. What is the drying time for Liberon Gilt Cream?
A. Allow a minimum of four hours drying time between coats - longer if conditions allow. Full cure takes 24 hours. For the best finish, apply several thin coats rather than a single thick coat, ensuring each layer is fully dry before applying the next. Once dry, the surface can be left with a matt finish or buffed gently to a shine.
