Preparation

For best results, ensure that the wood to be primed is sound, clean and dry. It's particularly important that new surfaces are completely dry before painting. Dirt, grease and wax must be removed.

  • Rub down previously painted surfaces thoroughly, preferably using 'wet flatting' methods, and wipe off with a damp, lint free cloth. Pre-1960s painted wood and metal need special precautions as they may contain harmful lead.
  • Treat any knots in wood with a knotting solution and fill any surface defects.
Application

Always follow the manufacturers instructions found on the tin, it is recommended that a small test area is applied before painting the entire surface to ensure compatibility. Apply in temperatures above 5°C.

  • Stir thoroughly before use.
  • Thinning is not necessary for general use, however if you're priming hardwood, apply up to 1 part white spirit to 10 parts paint.
  • Use a brush only, do not spray.
  • Apply one coat of Dulux Trade Wood Primer to all bare wood.
  • Work in the direction of the grain and make sure you cover the entire area with no gaps, a llow to dry.
Aftercare & Storage
Keep in a dry place away from extremes of temperature and protect the tin from frost. Store and transport upright with the lid firmly sealed.

FAQs

Q. Does Dulux Trade Wood Primer block stains?

A. Certain types of wood, such as pine or oak, contain natural substances called tannins that can bleed through paint and cause discolouration. Wood primer contains additives that block these stains and tannins, preventing them from affecting the final paint finish.

Q. Why use a primer?

A. Wood primer fills in small imperfections, such as cracks, knots, or grain irregularities, creating a smoother surface for the topcoat. This results in a more even and professional-looking finish. Using a wood primer before applying the topcoat can help reduce the number of coats required to achieve the desired finish. It enhances the coverage of the paint or varnish, saving time and reducing the overall cost of the project.
