Dulux Trade Aqua UniPrimer is a high-performance, fast-drying, water-based primer designed for superior adhesion on all major interior and exterior surfaces. Ideal for wood, metal, uPVC, and even glossy pre-painted finishes, it penetrates porous substrates, seals surfaces, and effectively blocks tough stains such as water, nicotine, grease, and tannin bleed. This versatile primer also inhibits rust and delivers excellent opacity, doubling as an undercoat for a smooth, professional finish.

To achieve the best results, ensure all surfaces to be painted are sound, clean, and completely dry. New surfaces must be fully dry before painting. Remove all defective or poorly adhering material, including efflorescence, dirt, grease, and wax.

Bare Metal Surfaces

• Soak a sanding pad in a mild alkaline cleaning solution.
• Lightly abrade the bare metal surface.
• Leave the surface for 10 minutes, then lightly abrade again.
• Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
• Allow the surface to dry completely before applying Dulux Trade Aqua UniPrimer.

Important Safety Note

Special precautions must be taken when preparing pre-1960s paint surfaces on wood or metal, as they may contain harmful lead. Follow appropriate safety guidelines and use suitable protective equipment during preparation.

After completing all necessary surface preparation, apply one coat of Dulux Trade Aqua UniPrimer.

• When treating stains caused by water or damp, ensure the underlying cause has been fully resolved before painting.
• Finish with 1–2 coats of a suitable Dulux Trade Topcoat.
• Apply using a brush, roller, or spray
• As with all water-based paints, do not apply at temperatures below 8°C, in line with British Standard BS 6150.
• HVLP Spray: Thin by 20%. Use a #4 Fluid Set.
• Airless Spray: May be thinned by up to 5%. Use a pressure of 1100–1500 psi (80–100 bar), recommended spray tip sizes: 208/210 or 308/310 FFLP. Use 100 mesh (blue) filters in both the manifold and spray gun.
• When using a brush or roller no thinning required.
• Spray: Thin 20% for HVLP and up to 5% for Airless application.
• Touch Dry: Approx. 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity.
• Recoat: 1 hour.
• For lower temperatures, high humidity, large areas, stain blocking, or tinted product, allow 2 hours before recoating.
• Curing: The dry film achieves full adhesion strength after 7 days.

Do not use or store in extreme temperatures and protect from frost. Store upright with lid tightly closed.

A: No thinning is required when applying with a brush or roller—the product is ready to use straight from the tin. However, for spray application, thinning is recommended: up to 20% with water for HVLP sprayers and up to 5% for airless spray systems to ensure smooth and even coverage.

Q. Can Aqua UniPrimer be used as an undercoat?

A: Yes, its high-opacity and smooth finish allow it to double as an undercoat, providing a clean, even base for topcoats.

Q. How should I prepare bare metal surfaces before using Dulux Trade Aqua UniPrimer?

A: To prepare bare metal surfaces, it is recommended to soak a sanding pad in a mild alkaline solution, lightly abrade, wait 10 minutes, abrade again, then rinse with clean water and allow to dry fully before priming.

Q. Can I apply the primer to new surfaces straight away?

A: New surfaces must be completely dry before applying Aqua UniPrimer. Painting on damp substrates can lead to poor adhesion and long-term issues.
