Ensure that surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, sound and free from frost.
- Clean all joints of dust, dirt, old sealants and other contaminants which could impair adhesion.
- Non-porous surfaces should be cleaned and degreased by wiping with a suitable solvent such as DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner on an oil and lint-free cloth before application of sealant.
- Porous substrates should be mechanically cleaned using a steel brush, sanding disk or any similar means.
- Areas adjacent to the joints should be masked with tape to prevent contamination of the substrates and to ensure a neat sealant line. Masking tape should be removed immediately after tooling.
- When back-up material is required, a closed cell polyethylene backer rod is recommended. Low tack polyethylene tape should be used in joints too shallow to allow the use of a backer rod. Back-up materials provide back pressure and prevent three sided adhesion that limits sealant movement capability.
If possible test on a small area before you start to ensure compatibility. Ensure that surfaces to be sealed are clean, dry, sound and free from frost, release agents, old sealants and other contaminants which could impair adhesion.
- The silicone sealant is ready for immediate use. Cut the tip off the cartridge and screw on the nozzle and cut the nozzle to the desired bead size. We recommend using the Geocel Cox Skeleton Gun for application. If back-up material is needed, it is recommended to use closed cell polyethylene backer rod. This will help provide back pressure and ensure proper sealant movement.
- The joint should be tooled within 5 minutes of application to ensure good contact between the sealant and the substrate. Tooling of the sealant also gives a smooth, professional finish for best results use Bedec Silicone Profilers.
- The width of the sealant joint should be designed to accommodate the sealant’s movement capability. For joints using DOWSIL™ 796 Neutral Silicone, the minimum width should be 6 mm.
- For joints between 6 mm and 12 mm, a seal depth of 6 mm is recommended. For joints wider than 12 mm, a width-to-depth ratio of 2:1 should be applied. In cases where fillet joints are required, ensure a minimum of 6 mm sealant bite on each substrate.
Always follow manufacturer's instructions found on the packaging
