Proper surface preparation is essential to ensure maximum adhesion and corrosion resistance when using Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer. Follow these steps for best results:
General Preparation (All Surfaces)
- Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, dust, and other contaminants.
- Remove all loose or flaking material before applying the primer.
- Use a degreaser to thoroughly clean oily or greasy surfaces before any mechanical preparation.
Bare Steel Surfaces
- All rust, mill scale, and surface contaminants must be removed.
- Recommended preparation method: Abrasive blast cleaning to SA 2½ standard for optimal performance.
- If blast cleaning is not practical: Use mechanical cleaning (e.g. wire brushing, grinding) as a second-best alternative.
- Note: Hand cleaning alone is not sufficient for proper surface preparation.
Welded and Assembled Structures
- When blast cleaning is performed after assembly, give special attention to edges, corners, bolts, nuts, and weld seams
- Remove all weld spatter, slag, and residue.
- If needed, grind welds smooth to eliminate irregularities that could affect primer adhesion.
Thorough surface prep ensures Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer delivers its full anti-corrosive potential.
To ensure a durable and effective protective coating, follow these application guidelines carefully:
- Mix thoroughly before use to ensure even consistency and pigment distribution.
- Confirm that the surface has been properly prepared as per surface preparation guidelines.
- Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are above the dew point to prevent moisture contamination.
- In confined or poorly ventilated areas, provide adequate ventilation during both application and drying.
- Apply using a brush, roller, or spray in accordance with good painting practices.
- Apply an even coat for best coverage and performance.
- Allow to dry fully before applying a suitable topcoat.
Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer is designed to be used under a variety of compatible topcoats, excluding those classified as Rapidry.
Q. What is zinc phosphate primer and what is it used for?
A. Zinc phosphate primer is a high-performance metal primer that contains zinc phosphate as an active ingredient. It’s specifically formulated to provide excellent corrosion resistance and strong adhesion on ferrous metal surfaces like steel and iron. Commonly used on structures such as fire escapes, metal gates, railings, and garage doors, it acts as a durable protective base coat that prevents rust and extends the lifespan of topcoat finishes. Ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications, especially in harsh or coastal environments.
Q. Why should I use zinc phosphate primer before painting metal?
A. Using a zinc phosphate primer before painting metal offers several key benefits:
- Corrosion protection: It prevents rust and oxidation, especially in exposed or humid conditions.
- Superior adhesion: It forms a strong bond between the metal surface and the topcoat, reducing peeling or flaking.
- Increased durability: It provides a stable, long-lasting foundation for your paint system.
- Versatility: Suitable for use on a wide range of ferrous metals, and even some non-ferrous metals when properly pre-treated.
This makes zinc phosphate primer a go-to solution for long-term protection and performance on structural and decorative metalwork.
