Bradite Rust Converter RC46 is a high performance, single pack, water-based rust converter pigmented with zinc phosphate anticorrosive pigments. Designed for use on hand or mechanically prepared rusty ferrous surfaces, it converts low level surface corrosion into an inert substrate, providing a sound base for subsequent painting.
RC46 is particularly well suited to structural steel and objects that are difficult to blast clean, including railings, fencing, guttering, and outdoor fixtures. It can be applied over slightly damp surfaces and produces a water resistant film with good anticorrosive properties. The product colour changes from white to black on contact with rust, providing a clear visual indicator that rust conversion has taken place.
Non-flammable and low odour, RC46 is supplied ready to use and can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. Manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certified management systems, it offers a reliable and practical solution for treating surface rust on ferrous structures of all kinds.

- Ideal for railings, fencing, guttering, and fixtures that cannot be blast cleaned
- Effective on surfaces prepared by hand or mechanical wire brushing
- Suitable for use in conditions where surfaces cannot be fully dried before treatment
- Minimum application temperature down to 10°C
- Water-based formula with no flash point
- Safe and comfortable to use in enclosed or occupied spaces
- Structural steel mechanically prepared to SIS St 3 by wire brush, disc, or hand abrading
- Railings, fencing, guttering, and outdoor fixtures difficult to blast clean
- Machinery and industrial equipment with surface rust
- All hand or mechanically prepared rusty ferrous surfaces
- Surfaces that are slightly damp where immediate painting is not possible
- Any ferrous surface requiring passivation of surface rust prior to painting

- Remove all heavy rust scale, loose material, grease, oil, and dirt from the surface before application
- Prepare the surface mechanically to SIS St 3 standard using a wire brush, disc grinder, or hand abrading tools
- The surface should be free from heavy rust scale but need not be perfectly dry — RC46 can be applied over slightly damp surfaces
- Ensure minimum application conditions are met — surface temperature must be at least 10°C and no more than 60% relative humidity, and at least 3°C above the dew point
- Stir the product thoroughly before use
- Application and use should conform to BS 6150 and BS 5493 codes of practice
- Stir thoroughly before use
- Apply one full coat to the prepared surface — brush application is strongly recommended for best performance
- The product will change colour from white to black where rust conversion has taken place
- Allow a minimum of 30 minutes surface drying time before overcoating
- Minimum overcoating time is 3 hours — there is no maximum overcoating time
- Allow 7 days for full cure
Thinning Guidelines
- Brush & Roller: Supplied ready for use. Thin with 0–5% water if required
- Conventional Air Spray: Thin with 10–20% water. Tip size 2.0mm, tip pressure 60psi (0.4MPa)
- Airless Spray: Thin with 0–15% water. Tip size 18 thou (0.46mm), tip pressure 2100psi (15MPa)
After Application
- Allow a minimum of 30 minutes surface drying time before overcoating
- Wait a minimum of 3 hours before applying subsequent coats or topcoats
- Allow 7 days for the coating to reach full cure before subjecting the surface to heavy use or exposure
- Confirm rust conversion has taken place by checking the coating has turned black before overcoating
Ongoing Maintenance
- Inspect treated surfaces periodically for signs of new corrosion or coating breakdown
- Re-treat and repaint any areas where rust or coating failure reoccurs
- Always prepare the surface to the same standard before any reapplication
Equipment Care
- Clean all brushes, rollers, and spray equipment with clean water immediately after use
- Do not allow product to dry on tools or equipment
Q. How do I know the rust conversion has worked?
A. Bradite Rust Converter RC46 changes colour from white to black on contact with rust. This colour change is a clear visual confirmation that the rust conversion process has taken place. Any areas that remain white after application should be re-treated before overcoating.
Q. Can Bradite Rust Converter RC46 be used on heavily rusted surfaces?
A. RC46 is designed for surfaces with low to moderate levels of surface rust prepared to SIS St 3 standard by wire brushing or mechanical abrading. Heavily rusted surfaces with thick rust scale must be mechanically cleaned to remove loose material before application. It is not a substitute for blast cleaning on severely corroded steel.
