For the best results, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, sound and free from loose material before application.
- Thoroughly scrape and brush the surface to remove all loose, flaking paint, dirt and dust.
- Use a stiff fibre brush rather than a wire brush to avoid leaving metal fragments that may rust and stain the finished surface.
- Treat any mould, algae or organic growth with a suitable fungicidal wash before painting.
- Repair minor imperfections before decorating and fill larger cracks or holes with a suitable sand and cement mix.
- Do not apply stabilising primer to sound, new or bare masonry, as it is intended only for porous or powdery surfaces.
Important: Paint applied before the 1990s may contain lead. Take appropriate safety precautions when preparing older painted surfaces.
- Stir or shake the container thoroughly before use.
- Apply by brush or roller. Spray application is not recommended for solvent-based products.
- Apply one coat to prepared powdery masonry surfaces.
- Once fully dry, overcoat with a suitable Armstead Trade exterior masonry paint.
- Allow 2-4 hours for the primer to become touch dry.
- Leave 16-24 hours before applying the finishing coat.
- Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C.
- Coverage is approximately 10m² per litre, depending on surface porosity and texture.
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from frost and extreme temperatures.
- Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use with a suitable brush cleaner.
- Do not pour leftover paint or solvents down the drain.
- Allow paint solids to settle and reuse cleaner where possible.
- Dispose of waste responsibly via a hazardous waste facility or according to local regulations.
Q: What surfaces can I use Armstead Trade Stabilising Primer on?
A: It is designed for powdery, porous exterior masonry surfaces. It seals these surfaces to provide a stable base for most decorative finishes. Do not use on sound new or bare surfaces. Extra precautions are needed for pre-1990s paint on wood or metal due to potential lead content.
