Overview

Osmo Decking Oil is an oil-based, transparent, satin ideal for use on decking and all exterior wood including garden furniture and privacy screens. The oil is a microporous finish that allows the wood to breathe and reduces swelling and shrinkage and stops your exterior wood from cracking, peeling, flaking, and blistering. It's also water-repellent, extremely weatherproof, dirt-resistant, and UV stable for ultimate protection against the elements. When dry Osmo Decking Oil is completely safe for humans, animals, and plants and will allow you to see the natural beauty of the wood grain.

Preparation

Always ensure the surfaces to be treated is clean, dry, and frost-free.

Bare wood

  • Species with a high content of natural wood extractives will need to weather off, usually for 4 weeks minimum. Alternatively clean with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner to degrease.
  • Resinous wood, such as Larch or Douglas Fir needs to weather for at least 6 weeks.
  • Pressure impregnated wood and tropical species like Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, Iroko need to weather off for at least 3 months.
  • Cedar requires 3 months to weather off to improve absorbency.

Weathered Wood

  • Greyed and weathered wood can be refreshed with Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel.
  • Avoid using power washers as this can significantly affect the coverage of Osmo Decking Oils.
  • Clean and sand old microporous stains and completely remove old varnishes before application. Sanding to finishing grades of no more than a P120 grit is recommended.
  • If additional protection against blue stain, rot, and insect attack is desired ( e.g. softwoods) , pre-treat the wood, if possible on all sides, with Osmo WR Impregnation.
Application

Before applying the product test a small area on the surface to be treated to ensure you are happy with your results.

  • Stir product thoroughly.
  • Use a stiff brush or lint-free cloth, we recommend using Osmo's Decking Brush (150mm) for quick and easy application.
  • Apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain.
  • Leave to dry for 12 hours.
  • Apply a second coat as above ensuring to apply the product thinly.
  • If a less intensive colour is desired, the second coat should be carried out with clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430. Generally the more rich and dark the colour chosen, the higher the level of UV protection offered. Avoid applying clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 as a stand-alone finish as this offers limited UV protection.

Note: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the bottle.

Aftercare & Storage
Cleaning

FAQ's

Q. Is it possible to apply Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil on a deck that has been previously treated with a different brand's oil?

A. Applying Osmo Decking Oil on a deck previously treated with a different brand's oil is not recommended due to potential compatibility issues. Different oil formulations can interact unpredictably, leading to poor adhesion, uneven coverage, and compromised durability. Inconsistent results, potential colour variations, reduced longevity, and challenges in maintenance can arise from mixing brands. To ensure a successful finish, it is recommended to sand it back to a bare wood and restart the process.

Q. Is it recommended to directly apply Osmo Decking Oil onto untreated bare wood surfaces?

A. Bare wood rich in natural extractives requires a minimum of 4 weeks' weathering before initial treatment or can be cleaned with Osmo Brush Cleaner. Resinous woods like Larch and Douglas Fir benefit from 6 weeks of weathering. Pressure-treated wood and tropical species (Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, Iroko) need 3 months weathering. Cedar also requires 3 months to enhance absorbency.

Q. Osmo Decking Oil vs Osmo Decking Teak Oil?

A. If you're aiming for an attractive coloured finish on your softwood and hardwood decks, Osmo Decking Oil is a great choice. For those seeking clear decking oil, Osmo Decking Teak Oil Clear 007 is recommended. While Osmo Decking Teak Oil Clear 007 lacks UV protection, Osmo Decking Oil offers UV protection.

Q. How many coats of Osmo Decking Oil is recommended?

A. You can either apply two coats of Osmo Decking Oil, or opt for one coloured coat followed by a top coat of Osmo Anti Slip Decking Oil 430.

Q. Can Osmo Decking Oil be applied without sanding or priming?

Recoating a deck previously treated with Osmo Decking Oil or Osmo Decking Teak Oil is possible without sanding or priming. However, if the deck has been treated with a different brand's product, it's essential to sand it down to bare wood before applying Osmo Decking Oil for optimal results.

Q. How do I protect my deck from harmful UV rays?

A. Unlike Osmo UV-Protection Oil, which is meant for vertical wood surfaces, you can use Osmo Decking Oil or Osmo Natural Oil Wood Stain on horizontal surfaces like decks. This helps protect them from the effects of weathering. According to Osmo, The UV-Protection Clear Oil needs a certain angle to work well – at least 15 degrees – which is why it's better for upright or slanted wood structures. If a flat surface isn't covered and rainwater stays on it, the UV resistance of Clear Osmo Oil goes down a lot. As a result, the wood can turn grey more quickly, meaning you'll need to do more maintenance work to keep it looking good.

Q. Is Osmo Decking Oil slip resistant?

A. No, if you are looking to have an anti-slip finish we recommend using Osmo Anti Slip Decking Oil. This is a clear satin top coat to go over the Osmo decking oil tints.

Q. Is the Osmo Decking Oil opaque?

A. Osmo Decking Oil is an oil-based and transparent, with a lightly tinted oil will allow you to see the natural beauty of the wood grain.
