Preparation

Ensure that the surface to be treated is clean and dry, and free from varnish, paint, wax etc.

  • Before application, the wood must have been dry for 24 hours and rain should not be forecasted for at least 48 hours after application to get maximum benefit from the treatment.
  • Can be applied directly to pressure treated / preserved wood. Apply to unsealed wood. If the wood has been varnished or painted, these coatings must be removed prior to applying this treatment.
Application

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin. The final colour finish can vary considerably due to the age, type & condition of the timber being treated. We advise to carry out a test area first in a discreet area to make sure you're happy with the final colour once it has dried.

  • Shake well before use for at least a minute, and during use to keep the colour uniform.
  • Can be sprayed with a traditional pump action garden style sprayer with viton seals. Can also be sprayed using an airless sprayer (Wagner or Graco type) ideally using a minimum 1mm flat fan tip nozzle (9 – 11 thou tip). Thoroughly clean the sprayer after application with white spirit and then oil it to protect the tip and moving parts (as per manufacturer’s instructions).
  • Apply a minimum of 2 coats to ensure complete coverage of the wood.
  • You will get a greater depth of colour with more coats, and more protection / water repellency and increased film depth on the surface, providing more of a sheen finish.
  • Drying time is usually 24 - 48 hours under normal weather conditions. Low temperature, humidity or certain components of wood may increase the drying time.
Reviews
FAQs

Q. Does Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment preserve wood?

A. Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is designed to penetrate deep into the wood, nourishing and protecting it from within. It helps to prevent the wood from drying out, cracking, or splitting, which can be caused by exposure to sunlight, moisture, and temperature changes. Additionally, it enhances the natural beauty of the wood, giving it a richer and more attractive appearance.

Q. Does Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment weatherproof wood?

A. One of the key benefits of Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is its excellent weather resistance. It forms a protective barrier on the wood surface that helps to repel water, preventing it from penetrating into the wood and causing damage. This weatherproofing capability is particularly important for exterior wood surfaces, such as fences, decks, sheds, and garden furniture.

Q: What is the main difference between Barrettine Wood Preserver, Wood Protective Treatment, and Universal Preserver?

A: Choosing the right Barrettine wood treatment depends on whether you need deep protection, surface enhancement, or a priming base—here’s how they compare:

  • Barrettine Wood Preserver
    • Complete Protection – No topcoat needed
    • Water-Repellent – High resin content
    • Use On: Bare or weathered untreated wood
    • Biocidal Protection – Guards against rot, decay, and insects
    • Available In: Clear and a range of colours
  • Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment
    • Non-Biocidal Protection – Nourishes wood and repels water
    • Water-Repellent – Contains quality resins
    • Use On: Pre-treated or pressure-treated timber
    • Surface Biocide – Safe for beneficial insects when dry
    • Available In: Clear and a range of colours
  • Barrettine Universal Preserver
    • Primer Only – Requires a topcoat for weather exposure.
    • Use On: Structural timbers or bare wood to be coated later
    • Biocidal Protection – Against rot, decay, and insects
    • Available In: Clear only
