Hammerite Red Oxide Primer

Hammerite Red Oxide Primer is formulated for use on both bare and rusty iron and steel. It’s a high performance, quick drying primer that provides a smooth protective base for over coating. It can be used on gates, railings, fire surrounds and metal drain pipes to name a few.

For aluminium, galvanised and all other non-ferrous metals, use Hammerite Special Metals Primer.

Always ensure the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dust, dirt, grease, flaking paint or rust.

• Remove loose rust and paint with a wire brush.
• Rub down with coarse abrasive paper to provide a firm surface.
• Abrade bare steel with coarse abrasive paper.
• Degrease all surfaces with Hammerite Brush Cleaner and Thinners and allow to dry.

Before applying Hammerite Red Oxide Primer always test a small area to ensure it adheres to the surface.

• Stir the paint thoroughly and apply with a brush.
• Hammerite recommend applying 2 coats to achieve the best results, allowing 6 hours between coats.
• A topcoat can be applied after a minimum of 6 hours, for best results allow 24 hours.
• Hammerite Red Oxide Primer can be over painted with most paints and is ideal for use with Hammerite metal paint finishes.

Note: Always follow the manufacturer instructions found on the tin.

Q. What metals can I apply Hammerite Red Oxide Primer on to?

A. Red Oxide Primer can be applied on to rusty and bare iron & steel making this perfect to use on gates, railings, fire surrounds and metal drain pipes to name a few.

Q. Can the Hammerite Red Oxide Primer be sprayed?

A. It would not be advised to spray the primer as this product cannot be thinned. We would recommend to apply with a brush.

Q. Why do I need Hammerite Red Oxide Primer if normal Hammerite can be applied directly onto rust?

A. There are many things to consider when painting rusty metal like the state of the metal i.e. Has the rust bitten deeply causing deep pitting or is there only a small amount of surface rust on the metal? If the metal is only slightly rusted and you are able to remove the rust with a wire brush and clean with white spirit then you can apply the direct to rust onto the metal surface without the need for a primer. If the metal is heavily affected by rust which has penetrated through the metal, it would always be advised to remove as much rust as possible and then use the oxide primer as this is a rust inhibitor this will prevent the rust from returning. The red oxide primer not only gives the substrate an extra level of protection, it also gives the surface a smooth finish for the paint to be applied on to.

All tinted paint purchases are final and non-refundable. If you're unsure about your selection, please refer to the product listing or contact us for guidance before ordering. Once mixed, tinted paints cannot be returned or refunded, regardless of delivery delays or changes in circumstances.

While we aim to meet delivery timelines, we are not responsible for delays caused by couriers, weather, or other external factors.

We recommend ordering samples or colour charts before purchasing. While we strive to represent colours accurately, screen settings and surface types can affect appearance. Opened tins cannot be returned due to dissatisfaction with colour.

Incorrect Item

Faulty Items

Faulty items can be refunded or exchanged within 30 days. All returns are tested, and if no fault is found, no refund will be issued you'll have the option to have the item returned. For faults discovered after 30 days, please contact the manufacturer for further support.
