Proper preparation is essential to ensure Coo-Var Rust Converter performs effectively and delivers long-lasting protection. Follow these guidelines for best results:
- Clean the surface thoroughly, all surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, dust, grease, oil, and other surface contaminants.
- Wash down using suitable degreasers or cleaners if necessary.
- Light to Medium Rusted Steel should be prepared by using a wire brush or power tools (in accordance with SSPC-SP3 standards). Heavily Weathered or Corroded Steel For more severe corrosion, surfaces should be treated by: High-pressure water blasting or wet abrasive blasting, following SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast Cleaning) standards.
- For optimal performance, aim to expose approximately 10% clean, bright metal within the rusted area. This helps ensure strong adhesion and effective conversion of remaining rust.
Following these preparation steps will help maximise the effectiveness of Coo-Var Rust Converter and provide a solid foundation for any subsequent coatings.
To ensure maximum performance and rust-stopping power, follow these application guidelines carefully.
- Do not thin the product. Stir or shake lightly before use to ensure an even consistency avoid over-mixing or shaking vigorously.
- Apply only when humidity is between 40% and 90% and ambient temperature is above 5°C
- On warm or sunny days, metal surfaces can become hot. To prevent flash drying and ensure proper penetration, lightly mist the surface with clean water to cool it before application.
- Decant the required amount into a separate container before use. Never return unused product to the original bottle, as this can cause contamination.
- Apply using a brush or deck scrubber for best results. These tools help work the product into the rusted surface, promoting deeper penetration and better rust conversion.
- Ensure an even coat is applied, fully covering all rusted areas.
- It will appear Initially milky / white when being applied and will appear navy / black when treatment is complete.
- Allow the converter to dry fully before applying any topcoat. Refer to the product label for specific drying times.
Proper application of Coo-Var Rust Converter creates a stable, paintable surface and extends the life of your metalwork by halting the rusting process in its tracks.
Q. Do I need to remove all the rust before applying Coo-Var Rust Converter?
A. No, Coo-Var Rust Converter is designed for situations where not all rust can be fully removed. However, for best results, you should remove loose rust, mill scale, and flaking paint using a wire brush or power tools. Exposing around 10% bright metal in the rusted area helps ensure optimal performance.
Q. Can I paint over the rust converter, and how long should I wait before doing so?
A. Yes, once the rust converter has dried completely, you can apply a suitable topcoat. You should wait at least 8 hours before overcoating with water-based paints, and 24 hours for solvent-based or other types of coatings.
