Overview

Barrettine Boiled Linseed Oil is a natural linseed oil that has been extracted from flax seed and blended with driers to help to lower drying times. It penetrates unsealed wood to leave a natural, water-resistant finish. The delicately enhanced colour darkens slightly with age. This oil is ideal for oiling interior bare wood and wood care applications. Please note that this product is not suitable for oak.

Barrettine Boiled Linseed Oil can be used as a traditional sealing treatment for terracotta tiles and other porous substrates. Can be mixed with burnt sand to form a caulking to fill gaps between timber and masonry.

Preparation

Make sure that the wood to be oiled is dry, free from dirt and repellant coatings such as wax, paint and varnish. Any existing coatings must be removed and the surface sanded down prior to application.

Application

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin, always perform a test to ensure compatability.

  • Shake the Boiled Linseed Oil well before use and keep the container upright at all times.
  • If the wood you are oiling is an oily wood, give it a wipe first with white spirit.
  • Apply the Boiled Linseed Oil with a brush or lint free cloth. Remove excess oil with a lint free cloth after 10 - 15 minutes
  • Apply at least 3 coats, leaving 12-24 hours between each coat and a minimum of 2-4 days after the final coat before using the item.
  • For best results on new woods, dilute the first two coats with 30% white spirit
  • If used outside, we recommend a prior application of preservative treatment that must be allowed to dry before applying Boiled Linseed Oil. Regular re treatment will be necessary.

Note of Precaution: cloths used for oiling may spontaneously combust. Immediately after use, soak them in soapy water then lay them flat outside on a non-combustible surface to dry.

FAQ's

Q. Why use Barrettine Boiled Linseed Oil?

A. One of the primary uses of Barrettine Boiled Linseed Oil is for the treatment of wood surfaces. When applied to wood, it penetrates the grain and enhances the natural beauty of the wood while providing protection. It nourishes the wood, helps prevent drying and cracking, and gives a warm, rich finish.

Q. What is boiled linseed oil?

A. The "boiled" aspect of Barrettine Boiled Linseed Oil refers to a process where the oil is heated to speed up its drying time. This makes it a useful product for projects that require quick drying, such as woodworking or furniture restoration. The faster drying time helps to minimize waiting periods between coats or for subsequent finishing steps.
